Chalais and its region
A lively market town straddling the river ‘Tude’, Chalais is nestled in the wooded hills and farmed valleys of the south
Charente department of France. Geographically situated at the crossroads of three neighbouring departments; the Gironde
(Bordeaux and the wine regions), the Dordogne (food and truffles) and the Charente Maritime (the sea), Chalais conserves
its own culture through its lively Monday morning market.
A former principality, Chalais is dominated by the hilltop Chateau of the Talleyrand-Périgord family. There is also the
twelfth century church and, for lovers of roman architecture, many nearby villages are dotted with fine examples of this
style.
The two thousand or so inhabitants of Chalais benefit from an abundance of local services and commerce, not to mention
schooling from maternal through to secondary.
For leisure activities Chalais offers a swimming pool, cinema and various activities throughout the year including the
four day International horse jumping festival. Autumn heralds the arrival of the antiques fair.
Gastronomically, alongside the traditional excellence of the cuisine of the South west of France, Chalais specializes
in the production of naturally raised veal...
